➡ Top 5 places to visit in Dalmatia!
(from north to south)
- Zadar: The city walls are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and were built in the 12th century. The symbols of this city are the unique sea organ and the widely known Maraschino cherry liqueur. And finally – during his stay in Zadar, the famous director Alfred Hitchcock could not admire the sunset enough, and according to legend, he said that the Zadar sunset is even more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida. Worth a look, right?
- National park Krka and Skradin: The national park includes the most beautiful part of the Krka river. It is open for visits throughout the year, and you can see it on foot, by bike or on an organized boat trip. There you can also see the old water-powered mills, which in the past were one of the main sources of the economic strength of the city of Šibenik. After your visit, stop by a special gem – the small town of Skradin, whose entire town center is a protected cultural monument. If you want to enjoy the view, climb the Turin fortress, walk to the Oldtimer Museum or visit Bribirska glavica, also known as the Croatian Troy. Let us just tell you right away that you won’t run into Brad Pitt there, you’ve been warned.
3. Šibenik: It is the only city in Croatia and one of only a few cities in the world where you can even find two UNESCO-protected monuments. These are the Cathedral of Saint James and the Fortress of Saint Nicholas. The city is known for the International Children’s Festival, a unique Šibenik hat that used to be red, but today is orange, and has become a symbol of the city, just like the Šibenik botun, which originally was part of men’s folk costumes and today can be found in all kinds of jewelry. Šibenik is the city where were born the most famous Croatian basketball player Dražen Petrović, scientist Faust Vrančić, pianist Maksim Mrvica, singers Arsen Dedić, Mišo Kovač, Vice Vukov, etc.
4. Split: For starters, take a walk along the promenade and drink coffee while enjoying the sun, just like the locals. After that, enter the Diocletian’s Palace, stop at the Peristil, walk through the narrowest street in Split, visit the Temple of Jupiter and the Vestibul, and climb the campanile of St. Duje. And when you come out of the Palace through the Golden Gate, you will find yourself in front of the monument of Grgur Nink and rub his big toe and make a wish. If you want to enjoy the greenery, head towards the Marjan hill, a favorite destination for walking, exercising or relaxing, and later head towards the most famous beach – Bačvice.
5. Dubrovnik: This city is an open-air museum! George Bernard Shaw said “He who seeks heaven on earth should visit Dubrovnik”. First, take a walk along the city walls, and then along the famous Stradun and enjoy a refreshing drink. Several famous films were also filmed in this city – Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Robin Hood. A few interesting facts about the Republic of Dubrovnik are that they were the first country in the world to recognize the USA in 1776, they had the first orphanage in the world, one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, and they banned slavery in 1416, saying that it was shameful, wrong, disgusting and contrary to human dignity. Hope you’ll also stumble upon a klapa concert on Stradun, how does this sound to you – listening to klapa music protected by UNESCO in a city that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List? An evening to remember.
